Manne Madness: Las Vegas Regional Tournament

The LEC’s 50th Anniversary Celebration Manne Madness Tournament consisted of four double-elimination regional tournaments, each featuring lectures from eight distinct professors, for a total of thirty-two tournament competitors. The top two professors from each region advanced to the Elite Eight National Championship in Miami.

The Las Vegas Regional Tournament took place on Sunday, September 15 – Friday, September 20, 2024 at The Four Seasons. The eight different competitors from six different schools gave a combined twenty-six lectures

Professors Catherine M. Sharkey (New York University School of Law) and Michael C. Munger (Duke University) advanced to December’s championship double-elimination final round in Miami.

First Place

Catherine M. Sharkey
Segal Family Professor of Regulatory Law and Policy, New York University School of Law

Catherine M. Sharkey is the Segal Family Professor of Regulatory Law and Policy at NYU School of Law. She is a leading authority on business torts, products liability, artificial intelligence, public nuisance, punitive damages, and federal preemption of state tort law. Professor Sharkey is co-author of Cases and Materials on Torts (13th ed., 2024) and Business, Defamation, and Privacy Torts (1st ed., forthcoming 2025), and co-editor of Foundations of Tort Law (2nd ed., 2009).

Professor Sharkey is a Senior Fellow of the Administrative Conference of the United States (ACUS), a member of its Roundtable on Artificial Intelligence in Federal Agencies, author of Algorithmic Tools in Retrospective Review (2023) and co-author of Government by Algorithm: Artificial Intelligence in Federal Administrative Agencies (2020). She is an elected member of the American Law Institute and an adviser to the Restatement Third, Torts: Liability for Economic Harm and Restatement Third, Torts: Remedies projects. She was a 2011-12 Guggenheim Fellow. Professor Sharkey served as a law clerk to Judge Guido Calabresi of the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and Justice David H. Souter of the US Supreme Court.

Michael C. Munger
Director, Philosophy, Politics & Economics Certificate Program; Professor of Political Science, Duke University

Michael C. Munger is a Professor of Political Science, and Director of the PPE Certificate Program. His primary research focus is on the functioning of markets, regulation, and government institutions. He has taught at Dartmouth College, University of Texas, and University of North Carolina (where he was Director of the Master of Public Administration Program), as well as working as a staff economist at the Federal Trade Commission during the Reagan Administration.

Professor Munger is a past President of the Public Choice Society, an international academic society of political scientists and economists with members in 16 countries. He was North American Editor of the journal Public Choice for five years, and is now a Co-Editor of The Independent Review. His recent books include Choosing in Groups (2015, Cambridge U Press) and Tomorrow 3.0 (2018, Cambridge U Press). Professor Munger’s most recent book, The Sharing Economy, was published in 2021 by the Institute for Economic Affairs.
