Overcriminalization: A Policy Roundtable Discussion

Event Details

  • Date:
  • Venue: Rayburn House Office Building
  • Division: Civil Justice Academy

We will be exploring issues related to the implications behind the scope and size of federal regulations.  This policy roundtable discussion will consider the effects of the existing regulatory regime and discuss whether or not a true ‘overcriminalization’ problem exists.  As a policy roundtable, the panelists will seek to lay out on-going issues and discuss potential solutions in a discussion format.

Questions to be analyzed:

  • What specific problems, if any, have been seen?
  • Is the creation of crimes by bureaus and agencies a growing issue?
  • Is there an optimal number of criminal regulations, and what should the severity of the penalites be?

Featuring:

Norman L. Reimer, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers

and

Dick Thornburgh, Counsel, K&L Gates and former Attorney General of the United States
