Attorneys General Education Program

UPCOMING EVENTS  | PAST EVENTS

State attorneys general face an incredibly diverse and complex array of issues that have significant regulatory and public policy implications. The Attorneys General Education Program (AGEP) offers substantive continuing professional education programs designed to help state attorneys general, state solicitors general, and their senior staff lawyers deepen their knowledge of the economics principles that underlie those issues and improve their prosecutorial and public policy decision-making skills.

Since founding its unique division just for attorneys general education in 2009, over 2,000 state attorneys general and their staffs from all 50 states, plus the District of Columbia and two U.S. territories, have attended one or more of its educational programs.

AGEP offerings include:

      • The Economics Institute for State Attorneys General: The Economics Institute elucidates the basic economic principles often found at the heart of legal and public policy disputes, like supply and demand, incentives, opportunity costs and tradeoffs, markets and market failures, property rights and exchange, contracting, gains from trade and investment, transaction costs, externalities, competition, risk assessment, statistical analysis, and more.
      • Workshops, Study Groups, and Symposia: Workshops and study groups build on economics training provided in the Economics Institute, applying those lessons to specific topics and public policy issues, like consumer protection or data security and privacy, competition policy, environmental law, insurance, or crime. Meanwhile, symposia feature panel discussions and debates by leading experts on issues currently facing state attorneys general offices, like antitrust or emerging liability theories.
      • AGEP “Roadshow”: In this new offering, the LEC partners with individual state attorneys general offices to offer customized one-to three-day on-site trainings at your home location, known as “roadshows.” You may choose from a menu of classes to create a tailored educational program for the office.

For questions or requests to bring an AGEP “roadshow” to your state office, please contact AGEP Assistant Director Ian Spears at [email protected] or 703.993.8008.
